Mulching & Green Waste Removal

On-Site Mulching & Green Waste Removal Across Macarthur

Every tree job produces a pile. Where that pile ends up is a decision worth making before the chipper starts, not after.

The pile is a decision, not an afterthought

By the time a crew is packing up, the tree work is the easy part. What is left is a driveway full of limbs, a lawn covered in chip, and a question nobody asked at the quoting stage: is this material staying here, or going?

It is worth answering early, because the two options cost different amounts and produce completely different results. Chipping on site and leaving the mulch is cheaper and puts organic matter back into some of the most compacted soil in Sydney. Hauling everything out costs more but hands back a bare, clean block — which is exactly what you want before a handover inspection at Gregory Hills or Denham Court, or before a sale.

Three destinations for the same pile

Chip and spread on site. The chipper runs at the property and the material is blown straight onto your beds, paths or under existing trees. Best value by a wide margin, and genuinely good for the ground here.

Chip on site, haul the chip away. The bulk is reduced first, then removed. This is the standard for jobs where there is nowhere to put mulch — small-lot frontages in the newer estates, courtyard yards, strata frontages.

Remove as logs and timber. Large-diameter trunk sections cannot be chipped and come out whole or cross-cut. Milling-grade hardwood from a mature grey box or forest red gum is worth something to someone; firewood-grade timber can often be left cut and stacked if you want it.

Most jobs are a blend. Say which you want before the crew arrives and it costs you nothing; ask afterwards and the truck is already loaded.

Why mulch matters more on Cumberland Plain soil

The clay soils derived from Wianamatta Shale across the Campbelltown district are heavy, low in organic matter and prone to setting hard. Through a run of 35-degree summer days they crack; after sustained rain they hold water at the surface and stay waterlogged. Neither state is good for root growth.

A maintained mulch layer does four useful things on that profile: it moderates soil temperature, slows evaporation, suppresses the weeds that colonise bare clay instantly, and — as it breaks down — feeds the soil biology that opens the structure up. On a new-estate block where the topsoil was stripped, graded and replaced with a thin veneer during construction, it is close to the single most effective thing you can do.

Species affects the product. Eucalypt chip — grey box, forest red gum, narrow-leaved ironbark, spotted gum — is coarse, durable and slow to break down, which makes it excellent path and garden-bed mulch. Softer exotics chip finer and rot faster, which is better for compost than for cover. Palm fronds and stems do not chip well at all, and camphor laurel and privet material are best removed rather than reused.

What must not happen to it

Two things, and both matter in this LGA specifically.

It cannot be dumped in bushland. The reserves along the Georges River — Simmos Beach Reserve at Macquarie Fields, Noorumba Reserve, the creek lines running down through Smiths Creek and the Scenic Hills — are exactly where illegally tipped garden waste keeps turning up. Campbelltown City Council publishes advice on the problem and pursues unauthorised dumping. Beyond the fine, dumped clippings are the main vector by which garden escapes and soil pathogens get into remnant Cumberland Plain Woodland, a critically endangered ecological community that survives here only in fragments.

Weed material cannot be recycled as mulch. Anything carrying viable seed or capable of striking from a cutting — privet, lantana, cocos palm seed, running bamboo — should leave the site rather than be spread as chip across your own garden.

If your job involves clearing weedy vegetation rather than a single tree, mention it. It changes how the material is handled.

Council's own options, and their limits

Council provides a kerbside garden organics service and the material collected is processed into compost locally, which is a genuinely good system for ordinary garden volumes. It is not built for tree work. A single mature limb will fill a green bin, and overloaded bins do not get collected.

Worth knowing: Council's community recycling centre handles household problem waste such as chemicals and e-waste — it is not a garden waste drop-off. Booked clean-up services have their own rules on branch length and quantity. Check the current arrangements for your address with Council rather than assuming, because these services change.

For anything at tree scale, the material leaving with the crew in one visit is simply less work than a fortnight of trips.

Where this fits with the rest of the job

Green waste handling is quoted alongside whatever created it. Ask for it to be itemised on quotes for tree removal, development site clearing and hedge trimming so you can see exactly what is included. The one thing chipping does not deal with is what is left in the ground — that is stump grinding, and the grindings from it are a separate, finer material best used as backfill rather than as garden mulch.

Chipping and green waste removal is arranged across all the suburbs we cover, from Glenfield and Macquarie Fields down through Campbelltown, Ambarvale and Rosemeadow. More about how this site operates on the home page.

We ask the crews we work with to carry public liability cover — ask to see the certificate before work starts, and get the quote in writing with the clean-up clearly in or out of scope.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep the woodchip from my own tree?

Usually yes, and it is the cheapest mulch you will ever get. Say so before the job starts so the crew can blow the chip where you actually want it rather than into a truck. Two caveats. Fresh eucalypt chip is high in carbon and will temporarily draw nitrogen out of the topsoil as it breaks down, so it is better on paths, under established trees and in bare beds than dug into a vegetable garden. And never pile it hard against the trunk of a tree or the stems of shrubs — keep it clear of the collar and hold the depth to roughly 75 to 100mm.

Can I just put the branches in my council green bin?

For a small prune, yes. Campbelltown City Council runs a kerbside garden organics service and the material collected is processed into compost locally — Council has run free compost giveaways from it. But a bin will not absorb the output of a tree removal, and overloaded or overweight bins generally are not collected. Council also offers booked household clean-up services with their own limits on branch length and volume. Check Council's current rules for your address before you plan around them. For anything beyond a bin or two, having the material chipped and taken in one visit is faster and usually cheaper than a dozen trips.

What happens to the green waste once it leaves my property?

Clean, weed-free timber and chip is a resource, and the sensible destination is a licensed facility that processes it into mulch, compost or biomass rather than landfill. What you should insist on is that it goes somewhere lawful. Illegal dumping of garden waste into bushland and reserves is a real and ongoing problem in this LGA and Council pursues it — it is also how weeds and pathogens get into remnant Cumberland Plain Woodland. Ask your contractor where the load is going. Anyone doing the right thing will tell you without hesitating.
